34 07 S, 132 59 E, Just a sniff of internet so a quick update. The wind is dropping off so now we a giving the new “Screecher” a go (asymmetrical)

0800 Hrs

34 15 S, 133 36 E, 130 Nm due South of Ceduna SA. Starting to make good progress with a nice sunny morning giving us a pleasant 2 sail reach. The wind is expected to ease through the day so planning to increase sail area as the day progresses.

The WA border continues to cause problems for our plans. Unfortunately its looking unlikely that we can stop in WA on our way overseas which means we could be offshore and isolating for up to 45 or more days. Thank you very much Ashleigh for your assistance in getting us at least this far and I fully understand that your first big ocean trip should not be of such an unknown and long duration. Hopefully these restrictions will improve some time and you will be able to join us again in the future.

36 03 S, 138 41 E, South of Backstairs Passage by around 40 Nm, expecting to be in Adelaide around lunchtime Sunday. Fantastic to be out of Bass Strait, its amazing the difference with the seas and therefore comfort once into SA waters. Busy now trying to work out logistics since that clown of a premier in WA decided to shut out fully vaccinated travelers indefinitely. Will update planned timings etc as plans evolve. All well on board.

Thursday, 20 January 2022, 1600 Hrs

38 27 S, 141 44 E, Just 10 Nm South of Portland but we aint stopping. Wind is around 25 kts from the east and forecast to stay pretty much the same for the next few days so should be good to continue on straight to Adelaide. Looking forward to start heading north again in a couple of hours as its been fairly cold despite the sunny last few days. All is well on board.

Wednesday, 19 January 2022, 1400 Hrs

39 03 S, 144 41 E, Half way between Wilson’s Promontory and Cape Otway and making good progress after the last 2 days. An easterly of 25-30 Kts certainly helps on a westerly course. All is well but with the seas building its time to bring out the pre-prepared shepherds Pie for dinner tonight and save the crew some preparation. Thanks Dinah, looking forward to enjoying it later.

Tuesday, 18 January 2022, 1500 Hrs

38 59 S, 146 30 E, Around 4 Nm NE of Sealers Cove where we will be waiting a couple of hours for a predicted easterly change this evening. The plan is make the most of it and hopefully go all the way through to SA over the next 4 or so days. Glad to have the last 24 hrs behind us as its been a slow bumpy passage across the first half of Bass Strait. Reception may be intermittent until we close land again on the western side of Victoria.

Monday, 17 January 2022, 1600 Hours

38 10 S, 147 48 E, closing in on the coast and the wind is easing. Hopefully the seas will follow suit so we can make some southing whilst the SW wind blows through.

1200 Hrs

38 30 S, 148 14 E, Just entered the Bass Strait oil Fields as the SW came in. Now Heading due west on the best windward angle we can make. The coast should give a bit of shelter from the wind and waves but I expect it will be a bumpy ride for several hours yet. All is fine.

Sunday, 16 January 2022, 1800 Hrs

37 35 S, 149 56 E, Gabo Island, Entering Bass Strait with variable winds and calm conditions. Unfortunately there is only around 18 hours before a West to SW change is forecast. Hopefully it wont be more than 20 Kts but that will be enough to slow our progress. It should turn around after 18 plus hours but if we didn’t get off the east coast we could have been waiting another 3 days. Burning fuel but this is no place to be hanging around.

1130 Hrs

Leaving anchorage at Boydtown, Eden. Tsunami warning overnight had us on anchor / weather watch in case NZ or somewhere else reported significant waves. All we had was a short burst of a 1 meter swell come through at around 0530 Hrs which could be seen crashing on the normally sheltered beach. Thank you very much Dinah for keeping a weather watch from shore every 1.5 Hrs to advise of anything significant occurring.

Saturday, 15 January 2022, 1200 Hrs

36 35 S, 150 12 E, 30 Nm North of Eden. A SW wind coming through overnight so we will be anchoring for the evening and expect to be able to move on again Sunday and get a fair way through the Strailt before another forecast front will slow us down for a while. Hopefully the following Easterly winds will be as forecast as then it gives us a good run through the rest of the Strait. All well on board.

28 19 S, 153 39 E, We are 10 Nm South of Tweed heads after making good progress from Coffs. The wind is starting to pick up from the North as forecast so we will be heading for the gold coast seaway to make towards Manly through there.

6 Nm SW of Cronulla, not that we can see it with the dust and bushfire haze. Anyway that’s about 25 Nm to Sydney so looking forward to arriving around lunchtime finally! Was the slowest 24 hrs we have had yesterday as the 30 kt Northerlies hit us south of Jervis bay. Lots of fun slowly pushing forward through the chop and of course the current for at least 6 hours. No jumper today and no beanie for 2 days. Looking forward to landing soon.

39 01 S, 146 25 E, Anchored snugly in “Sealers Cove” planning to go clubbing on a Saturday night. Will be staying put for most of the day whilst we wait for the worst of the current and associated fronts to move through. Will leave once the seas start to abate. Mmmm bacon is in the pan, may have to put the heating on soon as its still bloody freezing.

4 Nm West of Cleft Island (Skull Rock) Wilsons Promontory, all well as we turn the corner and finally head north. Warmer weather please. Will update tomorrow depending on reception.

38 37 S, 142 44 E, About 10 NM west of Port Campbell and 35 Nm West of Cape Otway, the Northerly is gradually building and will for a few hours before quickly changing to a SW to blow us across to Wilson Prom. Will probably be a bit hectic but expecting a quick run over the next 15-20 hours Plus. Next update from Wilsons Prom 150 Nm away.

Topped up fuel and provisions and ready to leave for the next leg through Bass Strait and hopefully straight on to Sydney unless a fuel stop is required in Eden.

38 01 S, 140 35 E, Currently just 70 Nm to Portland and a few miles south of Port McDonald. Unfortunately that puts us in the marina at around midnight so plans for a meal and beers at the pub will need to be delayed. Will be watching the weather and leaving again as soon as practical however at this stage it will take a few hours to organise fuel and other issues before we can set off again. Will update Wednesday with possible departure times etc.

36 01 S, 136 08 E, Just 30 Nm due West of Cape Du Couedic, Kangaroo Island. A little over 300 Nm from Portland so at the current rate (under engine with variable winds) we should be in Portland on Tuesday. As predicted before the outset.

Duane FYI tomorrow I expect to be pretty close to 37 07 S 139 36 E at this time tomorrow. (Note the time change as we are now on Brisbane time of + 10 Hrs UTC)

Friday, October 18 2019, 1030 Hrs

33 51 S, 131 07 E, Pretty much 140 Nm due South of “The Head of the Bight” so we wont be any further offshore for this trip. The weather as forecast (thanks for the updates Duane) came around to the South West so now we are bang on our course line for Portland and making good speeds in 20 Kts of wind doing around 8 Kts boat speed. We may catch up to some larger swells in 24 hours but they should move away from us. Very pleasant sailing overnight and this morning and all are well on board.

34 37 S, 126 14 E, Around 200 Nm from Esperance and approx 800 Nm to Portland. Getting there, damn cold down here. The wind looks like staying favourable for the duration of this leg with a little bit of motoring towards the end though. All is well, next update in two days.

Monday, 14 October 2019, 1700 Hrs

Leaving Esperance. Fuel is again full thanks to friendly locals but unfortunately a water top up wasn’t possible. There was a minor leak found in the water system and hopefully the only one that’s now fixed. The Water maker is working fine but I hate burning fuel to produce water, however its a back up for what is remaining.

All is well with some favourable but reasonably strong winds predicted for the next week. We have also adjusted our clocks in advance for the easterly trip so we are on Perth daylight saving time or lets say Tokyo time! GMT +9 hrs

1030 Hrs

Arrived in Esperance, Australia’s friendly town! We used a bit more fuel than expected on the first leg so instead of risking running low we have stopped briefly to top up fuel and water. Hoping to get away in a few hours.

35 14 S, 116 55 E, 55 Nm West of Albany, light winds still but a weak front will move through tonight and another late Sunday will bring stronger Westerly winds so expecting to have a good run for a few days with following winds. Will try to update again as we pass Albany and thereafter probably updating via Satellite phone every 2 days or so.

34 07 S, 114 48 E, 10 Nm NW of Hamlin Bay, all well with light winds NW – SW since leaving so engine has been on until now. Will probably shelter this afternoon for a few minutes to check a loose deck-light on the mast that appears to be wobbling around some but on current forecasts we hope to continue straight through to Portland Vic hopefully (8-10 days)

20 51 S, 149 48 E, Just under 60 Nm to Hamilton Island which still puts us in at 10 pm ish tonight.

Under engine in light following winds with some of us enjoying the sunshine and others the shade. At least the thermals are packed away in airtight bags. Looking forward to some unbroken sleep.

22 19 S, 151 23 E, 50 Nm Offshore from Cape Townsend which is just another180 Nm to Hamilton Island giving an ETA of around 10 pm Friday evening. Hope the pub is still open. Being in the “Capricorn Channell” I am not expecting any phone reception until tomorrow afternoon so we are enjoying the peace at the moment before the phones start beeping again.

23 45 S, 153 14 E, Around 45 Nm East of Lady Musgrave island. SE winds at 20 Kts is sending us straight to Hammo. Looking like a Friday evening arrival on current forecast and speeds. All is well.

25 19 S, 152 17 E, Half way up the Fraser Island coast. Will probably be out of reception in a few hours so the only updates will be via Sat phn until almost at Hamilton Island. We will be much earlier than planned due to the good following winds so hopefully there will be room for berthing at the other end. All is well on board

26 07 S, 153 28 E, SE of Double Island Point by 20 Nm. We had an interesting night last night dodging fishing vessels at the top of Morton Island but managed to Gybe our way through a fleet of rapidly changing course vessels. We may have some intermittent telephone reception for the next 12 hours or so (Telstra only) however after that time updates will be via the Sat phone once a day on this site and occasionally the AIS may pick us up. At current averages we should arrive at Hamilton Island in around 4 days provided the engine doesn’t eat all the fuel or the crew all the food.

28 15 S, 153 38 E, Approaching Danger reefs which means the QLD border! Making good progress and enjoying the whale displays. After tonight the regular phone reception will be intermittent so will be turning the Satellite phone on after that.

Leaving Nelson Bay. The noisy clunking sounds have been sorted with a few extra washers and tightening some loose-ish bolts. A forecast of beam to running winds should get us a good way up the coast in the next few days.

Moored in Shoal bay, Port Stephens. We have stopped to  check out some clunking / Groaning sounds coming from the helm. A couple of hours sleep and will check it out in the daylight

33 47 S, 151 21 E, Australia Day! Hope to celebrate some of it at least. Currently off Curl Curl Beach with around 25 Nm to go to Yowie Bay. Current ETA is 1530 Hrs

33 03 S, 152 02 E Still about 75 Nm to go. The wind has come in from the North but as Murphy will have it right on our tail making it difficult to sail a direct course. Current ETA now looks like Saturday afternoon so another year to miss the Australia Day celebrations on the Harbour.

30 38 S 153 08 E A few miles East of Nambucca heads. Unfortunately we have southerlies again as it took a while to sort out the fish trap lines from the Prop. Currently making around 3 Kts of speed but hopefully this will improve as the wind is forecast to go more East and maybe even North East. Current ETA now looks to be Friday evening.

30 18 S, 153 09 E, Coffs Harbour Marina. Unplanned stop but due to catching a fisherman’s line from a fish trap on our prop, we needed to come in and cut it free. Well done Colin for attempting it whilst 10 Nm offshore this morning at around 0730 Hrs. Bugger! Anyway will take the opportunity to fill our water and gas bottle before getting underway again

28 10 S, 153 39 E Currently off Point Danger on the NSW QLD border. Note we are back on NSW time. Sorry for no earlier update. We left Mooloolaba at 7 am this morning and went around Morton an Stradbroke Islands. Currently we have light Southerlies and are motoring south. More North winds are forecast so hopefully will get a chance to turn the engines off tomorrow. All is well

25 23.2 S, 153 01.6 E, Anchored off Kingfisher Resort Fraser Island. Too late for any shore party but looking forward to a good nights sleep. Will be off again around 10 am for the tides through the Sandy Straits.

24 36 S, 152 17 E. Slow progress with wind and seas against us, we did have the tide with us initially after leaving Gladstone however no assistance since. Currently 10Nm nth of Bundaberg (Burnett Heads) We have missed today’s tides for the Sandy Straits but should make them without trouble for tomorrow. Dropping anchor somewhere tonight.

Leave Gladstone. The wind has eased slightly and forecast to drop a bit more tonight. Hopefully it wont be too lumpy out there. Next stop will hopefully be off Fraser Island waiting for the best tides through the Great Sandy Straits.

23 50 S 151 15 E, Gladstone Marina More fuel water and wait out the forecast “Blow”

23 11 S, 151 07 E, 18 Nm due East of Yepoon the wind is starting to go a little more East of NE at 15-20 Kts. We have a strong wind warning for this area for later today so watching the changes but trying to get as far south as possible before we need to anchor or pull in somewhere. Possibly Gladstone at this stage to wait out the adverse winds forecast.

40 50 S, 148 46 E Around 20 Nm East of Eddystone Point, Top NE corner of the Tasmanian Mainland. Still under engine with variable winds. Its just over 200 Nm to Gabo Island so with a bit of luck should be there before the wind builds too much from the North from tomorrow afternoon. Next update will probably be in around 36 Hrs

42 33 S, 148 14 E Just North of Maria Island and finally some reception after the fires have cut the communications. Gradually making our way under engine again as the wind has just dropped out.

CYCA Rushcutters Bay ! arrived and Euphoria almost home. Will be doing a clean up before the crew have to race off to commitments then expect to take the boat to its mooring around lunchtime. Plenty more motoring after forecast northerlies didn’t re-appear yesterday or overnight. Thank you and well done to the crew for the entire Nth and Sth legs of the journey.

29 28 S, 153 31 E, Currently approximately 10 Nm East of Yamba. Managed to finally get some sailing in yesterday afternoon until an early SW change this morning that put us in a bit of a spin. Under engine again in light winds but forecast is for a N-NE shift this afternoon.

Mooloolaba Yacht Club (Sorry now called Sunshine Coast YC) have fuelled and hope to leave again tomorrow crew and weather permitting. Unsure of new crews arrival time at this stage. All well have motored basically all the way due to light headwind conditions.

23 37 S, 151 35E, 20Nm NE of Gladstone around 250 Nm to Mooloolaba next planned stop. Around 2.5 days from now. Stopped briefly for fuel and a top up of provisions. Crew are well, had prawns for lunch from the fish Co-op was my days highlight

21 11 S, 149 31 E, Approx 20 Nm off Mackay under engine. Expecting to be out of regular reception for around 24 hrs as we make our way to Yepoon for a short fuel stop. All is well

Monday, 26 August 2013, 1100 Hrs

Provisioned and waiting on the gas bottle to be refilled before hoping to leave after lunch. Current plan is to motor south to probably Yepoon for the next 2 days as SE 15-20kts forecast before it lightens off and goes more to the East from Wednesday. That should then allow us to continue on to Mooloolaba with a bit of luck for next weekend.
