Saturday, 16 December 2023, 2000 Hrs

Safely tied up at the CYC Adelaide

0700 Hrs

Leaving Anchor and underway again. A big job ahead trying to finish off the fresh food. Chicken Laksa last night, almost a full English Breakfast coming up, I’m not sure I can fit it in but then a Madras Curry that’s been marinating for a day or two. Anyway current ETA at CYC Adelaide looks like 2000 Hrs

Friday, 15 December 2023, 1900 Hrs

Anchored in Marion Bay, Yorke Peninsular SA. OK will be updating with photos and gaps filled when able. Anyway just 80 Nm to Adelaide so early start in the morning.

Wednesday, 13 December 2023, 1400 Hrs

Arrived Port Lincoln, Rain and 30 kts on arrival just to rub it in. Thank you very much for your help Lancelot good luck with your travels.

Tuesday, 12 December 2023, 0830 Hrs

Anchor is up and underway. Its very light winds today so will be motor sailing with hopefully a couple of hours without engine until it drops out again this afternoon. Anyway slowly slowly until more wind tomorrow. Updates when able.

Monday, 11 December 2023, 1500 Hrs

Rested a bit, hot food is the order today. Currently the place looks like a Chinese laundry. Good to Air out and hopefully drying our gear a bit at least.

I don’t know how many hours I have spent trying to calculate when to leave here for Adelaide given the amount of fuel left over. Its not worth the stress however so will need to add more time and top up fuel in Port Lincoln. Not an easy job there but we are running too low to risk the longer trip.

The plan now is to leave here early morning tomorrow and should be in Port Lincoln Wednesday evening. From there we should be underway Thursday arriving in Adelaide for Friday – Saturday.

Sunday, 10 December 2023, 2300 Hrs

34 29 E, 135 23 E, Anchored in Farm Beach anchorage. Phew. Absolutely soaked to the bone, so damn cold my teeth are chattering. Anyway great Job Lancelot that was certainly not in the brochure. Sleep time!!!!

1030 Hrs

35 08 S, 135 71 E Trying to make the best course towards Port Lincoln. Unfortunately the forecast is for the wind to build to gale force this evening and we are currently not on track to get around the Cape at all before the rest of the shit hits the fan. Consequentially we are changing course and its towards an anchorage (Farm Beach) at the head of Coffin Bay” (unfortunate names around here)

Saturday, 9 December 2023, 1130 Hrs

35 35 S 133 42 E, Wind 20 Kts from the SSE but expecting it to increase and go further East. Trying to keep as much east as possible in our course so as to clear the Cape some 100 Nm away. Its been relentless the last few days so hopefully in 24 hrs time we are able to turn left and get the wind behind the beam. Pretty cold here overnight but I’m told Sydney is searing in 40 Degree temperatures.

Friday, 8 December 2023, 1400 Hrs

35 57 S, 131 59 E, We are heading for Port Lincoln for fuel and to try to sort out the Raymarine “Seatalk” network issues. First the autopilot went offline followed over the next few hours of everything (GPS, AIS Wind Instruments) Fortunately I have my own navigation system in place.

We will move on to another destination the minute we can see a weather break. Hope to have normal communications for the next update.

Thursday, 7 December 2023, 1100 Hrs

36 06 S, 129 47 E, Light winds as expected until tomorrow morning. The moment this position was recorded the Auto Pilot ceased to work (no Pilot). Followed the booklet and plugged and UN-plugged numerous times. Factory reset as well. Rebooted how many times I forget. AIS and GPS occasionally connection lost but only for a second or two. A couple of times the heading comes up on the autopilot but again for a second or two.

Back to the helm chain again.

5 + days of hand steering ! F@*k !!!! any suggestions from raymarine or new / Ex owners?

Dinah when your home from work can you follow up please, thank you.

PS Welcome aboard Alfie when we finally get to Portland !

Wednesday, 6 December 2023, 1100 Hrs

35 29 S, 127 45 E, A very slow 24 Hrs trying to conserve fuel for the end of the leg. Average of only 4 Kts speed and only 75 Nm in the right direction Hopefully there wont be another day like this. The weather forecast downloaded on Sunday is still very accurate however I am updating our position today, hence the reason for an update today whilst the new forecast is being downloaded. Anyway we are somewhere near the middle of the Bight with 300 Nm behind us and still 700 Nm to Portland unless we need to revise our next stop location. All is well apart from the hair I have been ripping out.

Tuesday, 5 December 2023, 1200 Hrs 35 12 S, 126 18 E,

Finally put some sail up early this morning. Only around 10 Kts from the South but at least the engine is off for a while. Expecting it to drop out tonight and a quiet day Wednesday before finally kicking in from the end of the week. Averaging under 5 Kts boat speed but now have a chance to top up the fuel tank and the usual engine checks.

Current ETA in Portland has now stretched out to Monday, Planning to fuel and shower etc within a day or so before heading off again for Hobart weather still permitting. Update again Thursday.

Monday, 4 December, 2023, 0900 Hrs, 34 38 S, 123 58 E

No wind since leaving so motored easterly for the last day before dropping down south to now be off the Continental shelf and into deep water. Forecast is for more of the same for a few days so motoring slowly to conserve fuel. At least its given us a chance to settle into a new sleep pattern. All is well.

Sunday, 3 December 2023, 0900 Hrs

Leaving Esperance. Please note a time change we have wound our clocks forward one hour which we will need to do several times across the Bight. Weather is reasonable with a lot of mororing in the first few days.We will need at least half the trip under sail due to the amount of fuel on board. Update again in 2 days.

Saturday, 2 December 2023, 1400 Hrs

All set and ready to go, we were planning to leaves this morning but there is a current strong wind warning for this area. We waited for the 10m update hoping its downgraded. It is forecast to blow from the S= SW up to 30 Kts but should settle down after that overnight. In short a little more of a wait till first light and we should be good to go after that. Update on leaving

Wednesday, 25 October 2023, 0900 Hrs

25 59 S, 153 23 E, Currently 10 Nm SE of Double Island Point. Had a good run in a light following breeze. Finally a bit of the East Australian Current and engine to assist. This breese is predicted to increase this afternoon from the North so hopefully can give the engine a rest and be in Manly late tonight. Provisions are low but not expecting to eat the Cabin Boy today.

Tuesday, 24 October 2023, 1900 Hrs

Monday, 23 October 2023, 1400 Hrs

Anchored safely at Lady Musgrave Island. A bit of a swim and a walk around the island before a BBQ on board and a well earned sleep tonight.

Sunday, 22 October 2023, 1545 Hrs

Leave Roslyn Bay, We will be loosing the internet again in a few hours and then will be out of range for another 48 hours before picking up reception again off Fraser Island. Tomorrow night will be spent at anchor as its been a bit tiring hand steering till now and will be worth giving the crew a break. Next update probably on Tuesday Night

0700 Hrs

22 43 S, 150 52 E, 25 Nm North of Yeppoon. Sorry for no update yesterday however back in normal reception now. Planning to make a quick stop for fuel and Ice etc before heading off again as soon as possible. A bit slow so far as the wind has stayed from the SE, fortunately light and have been under engine since leaving. Northerlies are forecast to come in this afternoon and the next few days. All is well. Will update again today after everything is sorted.

Friday, 20 October 2023, 1000 Hrs

Leaving Airlie Beach, fuel topped up and away. A slight hitch with the aft head not working however after dropping anchor we were able to locate a fuse that was tripped so now it up with the anchor and off we go again. Updates when able most days.

Thursday, 19 October 2023,

The plan is to now top up fuel in the morning and be under way by 1000 hrs Friday. The wind has not abated too much yet but should have certainly over night. Update once underway.

1000 Hrs

A few last minute supplies and preparations before we expect to be underway this afternoon. There has been a fairly strong SE wind which has delayed out departure but that is expected to start dropping off this evening. Welcome aboard Naeus, Ben and Peter

Tied up. Plugged in to shore power, aircon running, Sarla trying to exhaust water supply in the shower block. Last job is beer followed by “I don’t remember’ then falling into a coma! Thank you to Sarla and all five, sorry 8 plus crew for helping in finally getting Huna here!

Wednesday, 13 April 2022, 1200 Hrs

07 34 N, 97 41 E, Just on 70 Nm to quarantine Anchorage off Phuket! Yee Haa. We have around 10 kts of breese from the NW and are making great progress under sail for a very rare period on this leg from the Cocos. Its was quite stressfull 24 hrs ago when the wind totally died out with still 180 Nm to go. Fuel wise I have calculated that we can start the engine again in another 35 Nm with confidence to at least make the Quarantine anchorage! Hopefully the next update is via the telephone networks when safely sitting out our isolation at anchor tomorrow.

Monday, 11 April 2022, 1100 Hrs

06 00 N, 95 13 E, North of Pulau We, Indonesia. Onto the final straight with not much wind as usual. Probably around 240 Nm to Phuket now. No hurry to arrive in detention as with public hollidays and the difficulty in getting a PCR test its looking like days before showers, airconditioning, clean cloths, Fruit, vegtables should I go on? Update from anchor on Wednesday I expect

Tuesday, 10 April 2022, 1100 hrs, 3 mins, 20 Secs

04 50 N, 95 46 E, Nothing Happened

(to be fair, we did sail most of the day in very variable winds, had a pirate party to celebrate arriving at the North end of Indo and no thats it really)

Saturday, 9 April 2022, 1100 Hrs

03 24 N, 94 39 E, Drifting along towards the top of Banda Aceh around 150 Nm away. I hear they hold great Pirate Parties there, cant wait to join another Party. After that its a right hand corner then civilisation sorry isolation ??? in a further 300 Nm. Its all too exciting

Friday, 8 April 2022, 1100 Hrs

01 53 N, 94 45 E

WEB PAGE HACKED

Warning! This website was hacked on Thursday. Someone (obviously quite insane) posted the outrageous suggestion that weather forecasts can be relied upon. Even went so far as giving an ETA more than 24 hrs in advance. The Cyber Crimes Authority is looking into this.

Thursday, 7 April 2022, 1300 Hrs

00 38 N, 95 08 E. Yep in the northern hemisphere ! Neptune must have enjoyed the party early this morning. After posting yesterday whilst adrift I downloaded an updated forecast for the next few days. The great news is that the update now shows wind today and then after further motoring Friday favourable winds following. This means we are back on track to arrive Tuesday morning prior to a three day holliday in Thailand. Fingers crossed the clearance agents can get the formal testing and paperwork through before Phuket shuts down before the weekend. Next update Saturday at this stage.

Wednesday, 6 April 2022, 1130 Hrs

01 19 S, 95 08 E, Well thats it, have kept up a reasonable average under engine for the last 5 days. Currently we are under sail off course in 5-8 Kts of breese. Since there will probably be no wind tomorrow and a maximum of 3 days left motoring I expect we will only be able to drift along from now on. ETA April this year I hope.

Oh yes, happy “Self Determination Day” to the Coco’s Keeling Islands ! Does this mean the “Territory Controller” and all the other IOTS will let the islanders make there own decisions? Naaah the Ego’s are too big to share power.

(IOT’s – Indian Ocean Territory SERVANTS) I think theres a D and I missing in their titles

Monday, 4 April 2022, 1100 Hrs

06 15 S, 96 29 E, Very glassy out there today. Still on engine as expected but frustrating just watching the fuel guage slowly fall. Still looking forward to Neptunes party in around 2.5 Days. Not much else to report on apart from more dolphins (baby included). Hopefully can report some wind next time. Thank you for the messages received, much appreciated.

Sunday, 3 April 2022, 1300 Hrs

A little bit of excitement, saw some fishing boats out here one through the day and then several more over night. A group of five coming within a few miles motoring along in a wedge like formation made us nervous for a quite a while.

Saturday, 2 April 2022, 1130 Hrs

8 23 S, 96 31 E Still in the middle of nowhere. The equator and hence Neptunes Party is 510 Nm away so something to look forward to apart from motoring along in the heat. Pretty much expecting no wind for the next week but hoping for something to assist in the last four days nearing Thailand as fuel will be in short supply next week.

Friday, 1 April 2022, 1100 Hrs

10 31 S, 96 42 E, Only 1290 Nm to go! Calm, Variable so under engine and very hot. A few dolphins around at times but there aint no-one else to be seen.

Thursday, 31 March 2022, 1500 Hrs

Underway, a few last minute supplies and paperwork just completed. Thailand here we come.

1200 Hrs

About to leave Cocos Keeling for Phuket. Finally underway again. Updates every secound day planned at the moment. Welcome aboard Sarla!

Still anchored a week later. Phone reception unavailable. Internet crap at $500 so far in the first week, cant even update this site properly. No fuel, no supplies. Total stuff up

Wednesday, 9 March 2022, 0745 Hrs

12 05.5 S, 96 53 E. Anchored at Direction Island, Cocos Keeling Islands. Here we are, unfortunately we are under quarantine conditions meaning we are not allowed on shore. (Our crime is being on a sailboat) We have just cleared in via the Australian Federal Police and are assured that internet is available from direction Island anchorage. Currently we can not find it, possibly turned off. Once we have a forecast and sorted some electrical issues we should be good to leave again very soon. Fingers crossed. Hopefully will update once internet is available.

Tuesday, 8 March 2022, 1200 Hrs

13 03 S, 97 34 E, Getting closer. 71 Nm to Cocos. We requested last week to stop via the Cocos Keelings for the purpose of getting a detailed update of weather conditions for crossing the equator and planing our route forward. The communications on board are not able to download any more than a 3 day, and small area forecast despite considerable attempts and costs. On Sunday we were denied entry but I have no choice but to proceed for safety concerns.

Monday, 7 March 2022, 1230 Hrs

14 09 S, 98 54 E, Counting down now just 170 Nm to the Cocos Keeling’s Damn hot out here.

Sunday, 6 March 2022, 1200 Hrs

15 04 S, 100 29 E, Making reasonable speed in a light 10-15 Kts breeze. We are now less than 280 Nm SE of the Cocos Keeling Islands.

Friday, 4 March 2022, 1300 Hrs

16 23 S, 103 47 E, The wind has lightened so we now have the Parasail up (The Weapon) and are making a good 5-6 kts in a little over 10 kts of wind directly downwind. Not so much luck on submitting forms to Authorities though, the phone company is making a fortune on failed uploads and downloads.

Wednesday, 2 March 2022, 1100 Hrs

18 32 S, 106 55 E, wherever in the Indian Ocean. Been giving the Sat phn a workout trying to get info and communicate with authorities amounting to a big waste of time and money so far. Anyway moving along well in 25kt SW wind and a 3m swell.

Tuesday, 1 March 2022, 1200 Hrs

20 03 S, 108 22 E, Almost 350 Nm NW of Exmouth, have just made a call to Border Force to request permission to make a stop at the Coco’s Keeling Islands due to weather concerns. We have had a good 24 hour average of 6.8 Kts boat speed so quite happy with progress. Wondering if Thailand has changed their policy for 7 days quarantine on board on arrival as there were set to be changes made today on that issue. All is well.

Monday, 28 February 2022, 0900 Hrs

21 28 S, 110 24 E. That puts us into international waters finally. 200 Nm West of Exmouth. I would normally start selling duty free alcohol to the crew, however we have all decided to take up a facebook friends challenge of no alcohol for February 29-31. Could be a long wait!

Sunday, 27 February 2022, 1230 Hrs

22 33 S, 111 34 E, Just 3Nm till we enter the tropics. Certainly have felt the temperature rising in the last few days. We are also 115 Nm West of Point Coats so still in Australian waters. All well with bread baking and toasted bacon and eggs sandwiches for breakfast. Not much else to focus on other than the next meal when there is no news of the happenings around the world.

Saturday, 26 February 2022, 1200 Hrs

24 34 S, 112 26 E, Still on the Continental shelf (Just) around 70 Nm West of Carnarvon WA. We left anchor in Shark Bay at 1500 Hrs (Note Time Change) Currently we are in 20-25 Kts Southerly which should remain for the next 24 hrs before lightening off. All is well!

Friday, 25 February 2022, 1500 Hrs

26 02 S, 113 13 E. Anchored inside Dirk Hartog Island, WA. Pulled in here this morning to download and return some forms for the clearance agent in Phuket. Still waiting on it and getting itchy feet as the wind is keen to push us out to sea. Sorry again for the lack of updates recently but have daily been spending hours trying to get paperwork done before we are isolated from the worlds happenings. Sent almost 30 Documents, photos and certificates through and still waiting on the last one arrrghh

Next updates will be via Sat phn every other day.

img20220225153401

Tuesday, 22 February 2022, 1200 Hrs

31 45 S, 115 13 E, 20 Nm NW of Rottnest Island. Another slow day yesterday but easy with the wind and sea following. Sorry for no update yesterday but there’s a lot of stuff to get through online before we turn left into the Indian Ocean

Monday, 21 February 2022, 1200 Hrs

33 04 S, 114 43 E 120 Nm West of Bunbury. Its great to be heading north and leaving the Southern Ocean behind us. Quite an exhilarating ride around cape Leeuwin yesterday afternoon. Today however sees a much slower day until the wind kicks back in. All is well.

Sunday, 20 February 2022, 1200 Hrs

34 36 S, 115 36 E, Now just 30 Nm South of Cape Leeuwin and making good progress in a strong SE wind sending us North. Despite the reports of how hot Perth is last night was freezing here. North sounds good. PS the “Baker” came up with a great result on his first attempt.

dsc_3980

Saturday, 19 February 2022, 1130 Hrs

35 13 S, 118 07 E, Finally into reception. We are now 15 Nm south of Albany in a light southerly. Had the slowest average yesterday despite recording the highest boat speed yet. We drifted for a while this morning whilst waiting on the breeze to fill in. Note the time change again. We used that extra hour to break out the bread-maker and give it a try. Baker Joe’s Job is on the line or he gets the job permanently. Will let you know tomorrow.

Friday, 18 February 2022, 1230 Hrs

35 10 S, 120 05 E, Currently 100 Nm East of Albany. The last 3 days have been a bit slower than anticipated and unfortunately still no phone / internet reception as the wind keeps sending us on the long course. Anyway all still well and will hopefully give a full update tomorrow.

34 18 S, 124 02 E, Around 110 Nm East of Esperance. It seems we were unable to avoid the centre of the high pressure so unfortunately burning precious fuel slowly motoring west. Hopefully will be back in internet range in the next 24 hours to get a weather update and catch up on happenings ashore.

Tuesday, 15 February 2022, 1030 Hrs

33 53 S, 126 53 E, Note the time change (UTC + 9 Hrs) Getting there. Around 200 Nm to Esperance where we should pick up an updated forecast. Just a light Southerly at the moment which should be the case for the next 24 hours or so. Making reasonable progress as the seas are calm with the underlying swell causing no issues. All doing fine on board and have settled into a daily routine which as always revolves around who is cooking what today.

Monday, 14 February 2022, 0930 Hrs

33 06 S, 128 52 E, 85 Nm South of Eucla SA Made better progress over the last 24 hours with the Gennika up for half the day before the wind and swell picked up over night. All is well

Sunday, 13 February 2022, 0930 Hrs

33 35 S, 131 50 E. The wind angle is improving so expecting a better course for the next few days towards WA.

Saturday, 12 February 2022, 1400 Hrs

34 07 S, 132 59 E, Just a sniff of internet so a quick update. The wind is dropping off so now we a giving the new “Screecher” a go (Gennika)

0800 Hrs

34 15 S, 133 36 E, 130 Nm due South of Ceduna SA. Starting to make good progress with a nice sunny morning giving us a pleasant 2 sail reach. The wind is expected to ease through the day so planning to increase sail area as the day progresses.

Friday, 11 February 2022, 2030 Hrs

34 29 S, 134 51 E, About 30 Nm west of Coffin Bay, After safely rounding Cape Catastrophe earlier today I have no plans to go to that bay. Anyway we will probably again be out of internet shortly so updates may only be every other day via satellite. All well on board with a good weather forecast

0700 Hrs

Leaving anchorage for the crossing of the Bight. I will try to update again later in the day whilst we have some internet coverage. After this evening all updates will be via the Satellite phone so will only happen every 2 days unless we require a weather update and will use that connection for a brief update. It will probably be around 7 days before regular internet is back again.

Thursday, 10 February 2022, 1900 Hrs

34 57 S, 135 59 E, Anchored in “Memory Bay” SA Early tomorrow the forecast shows the Southerly going more SE and then East. Expecting to leave early in the morning for the WA coast.

1315 Hrs

That’s it we have left the country! Checked out with Border Force a short time ago and are now heading for the Southern ocean. Not planning on going too far today into a Southerly but intending to anchor until daylight Friday in “Memory Cove” Friday’s weather should see more easterlies and a pretty much good run to the WA coast for the next week.

1000 Hrs

28 16 S, 153 37 E, Just 4 Nm short of the QLD border. Sunday, 11 June 2023, 1000 Hrs

30 15 S, 153 12 E, Just left Coffs Fuel dock and now 5 Nm NE of Coffs. Topped up fuel again as still looking at variable winds for the next few days. Half way to Scarborough and will look at the timings as to whether we go inside or outside Morton island. This will depend on the tides as its 40 Nm shorter on the inside but may have to anchor for up to 12 hours if the times are wrong on approach. All is well

Saturday, 10 June 2023, 0900 Hrs

32 07 S, 152 42 E, 10 Nm NE of Foster NSW. All well with W-SW winds most of the afternoon – Morning. Forecasts are showing winds going variable as a high moves across us for the next few days. Friday, 9 June 2023, 0915 Hrs

Leaving RPAMYC Fuel dock. Welcome aboard Phil and Steve for the trip north to Scarborough. We have a 15 Kt westerly currently which is expected to build a little through the day and should stay in overnight as we travel North. Yepoon!

Sunday May 28, 2023, 0630 Hrs

Currently off Indian Head, Fraser Island with around 200 Nm ahead of us. A bit slow going overnight and this morning. Trying to make as much distance as we can under sail before variable conditions set in again. Hopefully we will land not too late on Monday. Update via satellite phone again tomorrow.

Saturday, 27 May 2023, 1030 Hrs

26 20 S, 153 09 E, Currently 4 Nm North East of Noosa Heads. Finally under sail again after negotiating the shallows, dodging ships out of Brisbane and putting up with the SW change that finally blew through. A lovely sunny day now with 15 Kts of Southerly pushing us up to Fraser Island. The wind should hold until it drops off again Sunday but at this stage its looking like we should land in Rosslyn Bay on Monday. Please note telephone and internet reception will be sketchy from now until we approach Yepoon so updates will possibly be via Sat Phn over this period.

Friday, 26 May 2023, 1200 Hrs

Leaving the anchorage to meet the high tide at Jacobs Well.

Thursday, 25 May 2023, 1430 Hrs

27 48 S, 153 26 E, Anchored in “Tipplers” passage for the night and a rest / prep for the southerly due tomorrow. All is well

1130 Hrs

28 00 S, 153 28 E, Just 2 Nm of Surfers Paradise. We have not had the autopilot working since Tuesday night and the forecast is for a Northerly to build this afternoon and evening and a strong wind warning for Friday. We will be heading inside Stradbroke Island this afternoon and continue inside Morton Island for Friday to avoid too much of a bumpy ride tomorrow. Currently its a light Northerly with lots of Sunshine and finally some heat since leaving SA. Update again this evening or in the morning.

Wednesday, 24 May 2023, 1200 Hrs

30 01 S, 153 17 E, Coffs is now 20 Nm behind us after a quick stop off to top up fuel. Forecasts all up the coast are for more “Variable” winds to continue until Thursday when some Northerlies come in prior to the next big southerly blow. Anyway making the most of the calm to get as far North as possible under engine still. We are seeing it all on this trip, Just before sunrise was a trail of around a dozen satelites rising above the Eastern horizon. Dolphins daily as well as whales but most unusual was a semi submerged container floating off North Head Sydney, that’s rarer than most people believe.

Tuesday, 23 May 2023, 0900 Hrs

32 21 S, 152 39 E, We are well underway 6 Nm NE of Sugarloaf Pt (Seal Rocks) Sorry for the lack of updates but the weekend strong winds gave us the opportunity to take a couple of days off whilst it blew through. The wind is now variable but am hoping to get enough north before the next strong wind come through again from Thursday.

Monday, 22 May 2023, 1100 Hrs

Leaving the CYCA after fuelling and provisioning for the next leg. All is well

Thursday, 18 May 2023, 1915 Hrs

Arrived Sydney at the CYCA, Will be preparing the boat for the next leg and watching the weather forecasts for the next few days.

Wednesday, 17 May 2023, 1400 Hrs

36 20 S, 150 08 E, Left Bermagui an hour ago after a good nights sleep and fully fuelled. The forecast is showing this Southerly to keep blowing for several days so it should be a quick run to Sydney where a final top up on provisions is planned before continuing on to Yepoon. Update tomorrow.

Tuesday, 16 May 2023, 1800 Hrs

Arrived at Bermagui Marina. The wind did build to over 30kts so it was such a relief to eventually tie up and let it blow on through.

1600 Hrs

36 34 S, 150 06 E, Heading for Bermagui for fuel and to hide from the 30 Kts of Southerly which is steadily building. Its around 10 Nm to go so hopefully we are in before conditions get too uncomfortable. All is well will update once settled into the marina.

Monday, 15 May 2023, 1500 Hrs

37 51 S, 148 51 E, South West of Point Conran (by 5 Nm) so approximately 60 Nm to Gabo and hence the other end of the Strait. Light breeses currently but have been sailing along nicely since 4 am and hence some relief on whether we had enough fuel to make it to the next fuel stop. The forecast is showing some Northerlies on the east coast before it comes in strong from the south tomorrow. All is well as we look forward to turning the next corner.

Sunday, 14 May 2023, 1330 Hrs

39 08 S, 146 28 E, We have just passed Wilson’s Promontory and are now finally on a more Northerly course. Nice and warm in the sun but its been damn cold most of the time. We are still slowly motoring and hope to have some wind tonight. Currently variable at around 5 Kts. All is well on board.

Saturday, 13 May 2023, 1100 Hrs

38 55 S, 143 40 E, 7 Nm SE of Cape Otway, motoring along still and not expecting much wind of any use until tomorrow forecast. That’s fine as a calm first have of the strait is much appreciated as we are settling back in to the routine. We should be back into reception again near Wilson’s Prom in around 24 Hrs so expecting the reception to drop out soon. Update from the Prom.

Friday, 12 May 2023, 1500 Hrs

Leaving Portland heading for Bass Strait! Sorry for the lack of updates. Whilst in Portland I had my computer in for repairs as it was persistently crashing. Well done to Tony at the local PC repair place who has sorted the machine out for now at least. Anyway we are fully provisioned and fueled up with a much better forecast than when we left SA. Its looking like a full through the Strait without the need to shelter from the wind hopefully. Update again tomorrow.

Wednesday May 10, 2023, 0015 Hrs

Arrived Portland !!

Tuesday May 9, 2023, 1500 hrs:’

38 15 S, 141 01 E, which is just 30 Nm to Portland. We will be arriving in the late evening or early tomorrow and will update again tomorrow. Fortunately the seas are dropping and the wind is giving a better angle since turning left at Port McDonald. All is well

Monday 8 May 2023, 1500 hrs

37 07 S, 139 38 E around 5 nm NW of Robe. Will be continuing on for now to Portland . The sea’s are quite messy giving the auto pilot a hard time but hopefully the wind and sea will drop tonight. The Next possible anchorage if it doesn’t improve soon will be south of beachport. Just waiting on the BOM update soon. Will update if anchored or tomorrow with reception.

Sunday, 7 May 2023, 1030 Hrs

Leaving Wirrina Cove, the wind is lighter today but looking like it will stay from the South to SW for the next few days. Expecting a slow trip to begin with but hope to make up some time once we get to the East Coast of NSW

Saturday May 5, 2023

Currently in Wirruna Cove, SA awaiting on the wind to abate. Hopefully we will be underway on Sunday to head for Portland or Apollo Bay Vic to finish provisioning and catch up on the current delay. Current computer issues will mean updates will only be seen on the “posts page” above for now. Next update on departure.

Monday March 27 2023, 2130 hrs

Arrived Shell Harbour and having a beer. Thank you very much Detlef. Hopefully you will be able to jolin me again soon on another trip.

1300 Hrs

33 44 S, 151 28 E, Just 10 Nm NE of Sydney heads. That gives us around 60 Nm to Shell Harbour. We have slowed a little since passing Port Stephens as the current has dropped off to nothing, its been quite a good run since Coffs with about 2-3 Kts of assistance. Anyway ETA looks like just after midnight tonight. All is fine

Sunday March 26 2023, 1230 Hrs

30 47 S, 153 12 E, Around 8 Nm NE of Trial Bay. Under engine again since leaving Coffs this morning. Repairs to the water system went fine but delayed leaving with frequent squalls last night so we left it until the tide turned this morning. All is well with the wind to turn to the NE this afternoon / evening.

Saturday March 25 2023, 0930 Hrs

Coffs Harbour fuel dock. We didn’t actually need fuel but topped up anyway. The reason to stop was that a hose came off the freshwater system and was pumping water into the bilge. As the hose was at the back of the engine it was too hot to access. Anyway Detlef knows what I’m like if I cant have my coffee so for sanity’s sake have stopped to rectify the hose and should be on our way again after cooling and repairs. Will update when again underway.

Friday, 24 March 2023, 1400 Hrs

27 58 S, 153 29 E We left Southport Yacht Club at 1300 Hrs Sydney time. Its taken about 3 hrs to post this update due to computer issues but am slowly sorting stuff out. Anyway all is well after fueling up and checking through and familiarising ourselves with the boat. We are now around 15 Nm North of Byron Bay under engine in light winds. Will update again tomorrow.

Thursday, 23 March 2023, 0830 Hrs

Leaving Manly. Heading down to the Gold Coast seaway where we will top up fuel and have a few hours at anchor before leaving the Seaway and heading South on Friday Morning. The wind is expected to start blowing from the NE to get us underway. Welcome aboard to Detlef ! Its been a few years since we last sailed together so looking forward to a good catch up along the way.

Arrived, 11.15 am

Update later as we scramble for the airport. Well done guy’s big mission

Thursday, 9 March 2023, 0730 Hrs

34 27 S 115 04 E, Getting closer now just 120 Nm to Mandurah, looks like a little over 24 Hrs until Sagres III is in her new berth. Finally a nice sunny and warm day after the last several weeks freezing down in the Southern Ocean whilst the rest of Australia swelters in the heat. Look out WA!

Wednesday, 8 March 2023, 0800 Hrs

35 10 S, 117 24 E Only around 250 Nm to go so the ETA is looking like Saturday at this stage. Forecasts are good and we are 20 Nm west of Albany now. All’s fine.

Tuesday, 7 March 2023, 1000 Hrs

34 38 S, 119 43 E, 21 Nm SE of Bremer Bay WA. Only about 4 days to Mandurah now. Despite light winds we made good distance over the last day so we should be passing Albany in the early hours of tomorrow morning and some stronger Easterlies are forecast to get us straight to the Cape. All well as we get used to being out in the swell again.

Monday, 6 March 2023

Leaving Esperance, we should enjoy some light winds today as we point the boat towards Albany and beyond.

Saturday, 4 March 2023

Land, the best cure for cabin fever! Arrived 1730 Tokyo time which is 1630 WA time I think? Anyway beer o’clock.

Saturday, 4 March 2023, 0700 Hrs

34 24 S, 122 12 E, About 40 Nm south of Esperance, still no reception so updating this as I log on for a Sat phn weather update. Not looking good as the barometer has fallen sharply in the last 24-48 hrs and now we have 20 Kts from the WSW (on the nose) Hopefully the forecast wont be too bad but maybe I’m dreaming. Will update on whether we are stopping at Esperance or pushing on.

Friday, 3 March 2023, 0830 Hrs

34 34 S, 124 33 E, Well it wasn’t to be light and variable winds yesterday. The breese filled in nicely giving us a good speed on a reasonable course for the last 24 hrs. Currently approximately 130 Nm from our waypoint to the South of Esperance so will hope to get a weather update then. We are not planning to stop at Esperance but will update once our reception returns some time tomorrow.

Thursday, 2 March 2023, 0930 Hrs

33 58 S, 126 55 E, Finally under engine after stretching the available wind as far as we could go. Expecting light and variable winds for the next 2 days so motoring along slowly to conserve what we have. Again it will probably be two days before the next update on the Sat phone before we may start to get intermittent reception. All is well.

Wednesday, March 1 2023, 0830 Hrs

33 39 S, 129 11 E, Light and variable SE winds increasing at times. Making reasonable progress on the best course we can hold. Nothing much happening out here which works for us.

Tuesday, 28 February 2023, 0800 Hrs

34 26 S, 131 28 E, somewhere in the Great Southern Ocean. Still about 450 Nm to Esperance or phone range. Finally some excitement on the fishing side! One big Tuna jumped on the end of the line to make Shannon’s day. Should be able to fit some of it into the freezer but with 9 Kg of frozen meats plus this monster I think we will need a crane to lift us off the boat in WA. Photographic evidence to be provided on landfall. All is fine, the next update is planned for Thursday.

Monday, February 27 2023, 1000 Hrs

34 46 S, 133 42 E Nothing much to report, we are just 100 Nm into the Bight with around 400 Nm to the other side.

Sunday, 26 February 2023, 1400 Hrs

35 57 S, 135 31 E, 5 Nm West of Cape Carnot, That puts us about 80 Nm from the deep water in the bight. Light winds but now with full sail up so saving some fuel for now. Downloaded a weather update and are expecting to be away from reception soon meaning my next planned update will be Tuesday via the Satelite Phone. Reminder if you don’t see any updates make sure you are on the “Posts” page of this site.

0815 Hrs

Anchor is up finally. A few issues with the anchor winch meant hauling up by hand. An addition to the work list on arrival in WA. We have gained an extra hour and a half today as to keep the sunrise and sunset approximately right have now moved to + 9 Hrs GMT (Tokyo time)

Sunday, 26 February 2023, 1900 Hrs

34 58 S, 135 59 E, Anchored in Memory Cove

1245 Hrs

Leaving Port Lincoln. The forecast is looking good from Sunday morning for at least 7-10 Days which should see us across the Bight. The plan is to anchor tonight in memory Cove whilst the S-SW wind dies off and head off again Sunday morning. Fully provisioned and fuel and water topped up. Hopefully we will get enough sailing in to conserve fuel but at the same time there will be a bit of motoring in the light winds forecast. Update again tomorrow.

Thursday, February 23 2023, 0930 Hrs

Arrived Port Lincoln, update soon. All well

Wednesday, 22 February 2023, 0800 Hrs

35 39 S, 137 47 E, We left the anchorage at 0630 Hrs and expect to be in Port Lincoln within 24 Hrs. Light winds after the past day at a very windy anchorage. All is well.

Tuesday, 21 February 2023, 1130 Hrs

34 46 S, 132 52 E, Anchored in American Bay Kangaroo Island. We arrived early in the morning (01.45 Hrs) with the wind building from the SE. By daylight it was blowing up to 35 Kts here so who knows what it reached on the open water. Anyway its looking like it should start dropping off in the afternoon so we are planning to get away again then provided it does. Will update when underway again.

Monday, 20 February 2023, 0930 Hrs

36 33 S, 138 58 E, No reception here. Around 45 Nm NW of Kingston SA. Still motoring along with little wind however the wind should start building through the day from the SE which will speed things up a bit. Will update when back in phone range but for now we are monitoring the Sat phone. All well I think Bangers and mash is on tonight’s menu.

Sunday, 19 February 2023, 1030 Hrs

37 53 S, 140 15 E, Slowly making our way NW in variable winds under engine. Currently off Cape Banks but not expecting much in the way of wind for the next day or so. There’s no hurry however as the Port Lincoln regatta is currently underway and berthing is a problem until Thursday which could see us at anchor a day or two whilst we wait. Anyway all is fine on board.

Saturday, 18 February 2023, 1215 Hrs

Leaving Portland and heading for Port Lincoln. Note we are now on Adelaide time. Update again tomorrow.

Wednesday, 15 February 2023, 1230 Hrs

38 21 S, 141 37 E, Safely tied up at the Portland Marina. Thank you Phil for your much appreciated help getting us started. Enjoy the Emporium and fish and Chips and beer here during your stay

Tuesday, 14 February 2023, 1100 Hrs

38 56 S, 144 19 E, Just getting back into reception, 35 Nm East of Cape Otway. Warmer conditions than the last few days with the sun shining and the fishing gear back out. We expect to be in Portland in around 24 Hrs or so to re-provision, make a few minor repairs / adjustments and send Phil off on his next adventure hung over. All is well

Wednesday, 15 February 2023, 1230 Hrs

38 21 S, 141 37 E, Safely tied up at the Portland Marina. Thank you Phil for your much appreciated help getting us started. Enjoy the Emporium and fish and Chips and beer here during your stay

Monday, 13 February 2023, 1430 Hrs

37 08 S, 146 20 E, Just rounded Wilson’s Promontory and now under sail after a few hours motor slamming around the corner. That’s as far south as we want to go so warmer (not hot I hope) weather on its way. Normal phone service should happen for much of the way to Cape Otway with maybe 12 hours or so overnight without. All is well.

1100 Hrs

Leaving Sealers Cove. Just a short detour into refuge Cove before making our way to Wilson’s Promontory and heading further North again. Has been a bit cool down here despite the rest of the country having heatwave conditions. Shannon finally landed a fish but is too embarrased by its size to allow a photo. Its back in the water for a second chance of life.

Oops, how did this photo get here !

Saturday, 11 February 2023, 1700 Hrs

39 00 S, 146 26 E, Sealers Cove (well not quite yet) Planning to anchor in the next hour however I don’t expect any reception whilst inside the Cove. Will probably move to Refuge Cove for Sunday night and get a weather update along the short journey so will update again then. Shannon’s onto Thai Green Curry for tonight to keep us warm in these Southern extreme climates!

Sealers Cove

1100 Hrs

38 24 S, 147 08 E, Around 30 Nm to the entrance to Corner Inlet where we are planning to Anchor for approximately 36 Hrs whilst a Westerly blows through. We have predominantly been motoring or motor sailing in light conditions for the last day. A day or so at anchor will give us a chance to get a few odd jobs onboard done as well as a cooked breakfast or two. Reception will still be intermittent depending on the anchorage we find. Updates when able.

Friday, 10 February 2023, 1000 Hrs

37 44 S, 149 42 E, Around 20 Nm into Bass Strait just south of little Rame Head. The sun is out and the wind has dropped right out giving everyone a bit of a rest from the wet and rocking first two days. Currently under motor which looks like the forecast for the next 36 Hrs. We will be loosing reception today intermittently so may not update tomorrow but will do when able. The plan based on the forecast will be to anchor at Wilsons Promontory for Sunday whilst a westerly pushes through and hopefully be underway again on Monday. All well on board.

Thursday, 9 February 2023, 0900 Hrs

35 42 S, 150 34 E, 15 Nm East of Batemans Bay. Damn wet and windy overnight making the first night at sea a bit uncomfortable for us all. Hopefully everything will calm down from Friday for everyone to find there sea legs. Forecast is at least for good wind directions but a wet day still ahead. Hopefully my website will be up and running soon after being Hacked yesterday.

Wednesday, 8 February 2023, 11425 Hrs

Leaving CYCA Sydney for a run down the NSW Coast before entering Bass Strait on Friday morning is the plan. Shake down cruise to Portland Victoria.

32 42 S, 152 04 E, Soldiers Point Marina. We have arrived. Thank you so much all crew. Dinah, William and Peter. I will try and update this a little later as there are lots of stuff I need to get up to date now that the shore has caught up with me again.

Wednesday, 14 December 2022, 1200 Hrs

32 00 S, 153 11 E, 35 Nm ENE of Foster. We are a fair way offshore in 10-15 Kts of wind waiting on a Southerly change due around now. Fortunately the wind is currently lower than forecast so hopefully the southerly will also be lower than expected. Making reasonable speeds of up to 6 kts but it drops down to 4 Kts on the larger wave size every now and then. ETA is still late tonight but most likely early Thursday morning. All still well on board.

Tuesday, 13 December 2022, 1200 Hrs

29 48 S, 153 19 E, Currently off Wilson’s head which is 5 Nm North of Wooli Creek for those familiar with the weather reporting area. Our current ETA in Port Stephens is tomorrow night or early Thursday morning. There are almost 200 Nm to go so hopefully the predicted Southerly Wednesday night wont slow us up too much. Its been a very difficult year in forecasts as the weather has been very unpredictable changing frequently. All well on board

Monday, 12 December 2022, 1530 Hrs

28 06 S 153 35 E, approximately off Southport with 25+ Knots of wind expected for the next 12 hours or so. A busy day after leaving Wide Bay Bar and we are all exhausted but happy to be in deeper waters.

Sunday, 11 December 2022, 1200 Hrs

25 47 S, 153 09 E, Just crossed the Wide Bay Bar, Phew All is well. A quick stop off tonight to pick up crew, another Peter and hopefully we will have good winds for the second half of our journey.

Saturday, 10 December 2022, 1000 Hrs

Leaving the anchorage and moving closer to Tin Can Bay. The wind is forecast to go more to the east tomorrow making a safer Bar Crossing as its currently forecast to be up to 20 Kts SE this afternoon, which it feels like its already reached. Anyway its a good chance to do our engine checks and install a third reef in the main for part 2 of the trip South. All is well after a huge sleep.

25 44 S, 152 59 E, Anchored near Elbow Pt in the Sandy Straits. Phew what a long 18 Hrs or so. There were thunderstorms, rain and squalls last night as we travelled down Hervey Bay. The timing was perfect to keep traveling through to the shallows for high tide and following current. Anyway time to rest up because neither of us managed to get more than an hours sleep since midnight.

23 57 S, 151 49 E, 7 Nm East of Bustard Head. On track to make it into Hervey Bay and then through the shallow for High tide tomorrow morning. Managed a bit of non engine assisted sailing overnight but a forecast short southerly blowing through Friday / Saturday should see us popping out wide bay bar either Saturday or Sunday conditions dependant. All is well.
